Dr. Christopher Thompson, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School with a research laboratory that focuses on medical device and technology development, joined BioVentures MedTech in 2024.
He also serves as the Director of Endoscopy and Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is a practicing physician and endoscopic surgeon focusing on the minimally invasive treatment of obesity and other gastrointestinal conditions.
Dr. Thompson’s academic and clinical efforts have focused on three main areas: obesity and metabolic disease; development of new endosurgical procedures and technologies; and endoscopic training and assessment. He has invented numerous procedures and performed them in First-in-Human studies. He developed the concept for endoscopic suturing to treat obesity without incisions when he was a fellow in training at Harvard in 2003. He subsequently patented the methods and distilled this to practice in phases, ultimately performing the First-in-Human Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) in 2012.
In addition to this clinical work, Dr. Thompson is an academic researcher and entrepreneur. He has over 300 peer-reviewed publications with an H-index of over 70, and various innovation awards. He authored the first textbook on Bariatric Endoscopy and the first instructional DVD on Bariatric Endoscopy techniques.
Dr. Thompson has co-founded six start-up companies including Beacon Endoscopy (acquired by Covidien / Medtronic in 2013), EnteraSense (under Cook Medical distribution deal), GI Windows Surgical, Envision Endoscopy, and Bariendo. He is also on the Scientific Advisory Board for several larger corporations including Medtronic, Fuji Film, Boston Scientific, and Endoquest Robotics.
Dr. Thompson received his Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University and completed his training in Interventional Endoscopy as a Harvard Fellow in the combined Massachusetts General / Brigham and Women’s hospital program. Dr. Thompson is a frequent Forbes Magazine contributor.
