Jonathan P. Gertler, MD
Managing Director

Jonathan P. Gertler joined BioVentures Investors in 2019 and is currently a Managing Director. He has over 35 years of scientific, clinical, entrepreneurial, transactional, and investment expertise in both academic medicine and in the life sciences sector. Dr. Gertler is also the co-founder, Managing Partner and CEO of Back Bay Life Science Advisors, a global life science consultancy and advisory group, and founder of three additional healthcare companies.

Previously, Jonathan served as Senior Partner and Managing Director of Leerink Swann Strategic Advisors, the consulting arm of Leerink Swann. He also led several investment banking groups: BioPharma Investment Banking at Leerink Swann and Health Care Investment Banking at Adams Harkness/Canaccord Adams. Jonathan was a Venture Partner for Schroder Ventures, now SV Health Partners while still an active academic surgeon.

Jonathan spent many years as a practicing academic vascular surgeon. After training in General Surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital and in Vascular Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, he became Chief of Vascular Surgery at SUNY-HSCB in New York and subsequently returned as an attending surgeon to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where he was also Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Co-Director of the Vascular Research and Diagnostic Laboratories at the MGH. Jonathan has published extensively in clinical vascular surgery and endothelial and smooth muscle cell biology.

Jonathan currently serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board at Boston University School of Medicine, as well as on the Advisory Board of Northeastern University Dept of Bioengineering and the Innovation Program at the University of Connecticut and has previously been a board member of several private and public companies and non-profit organizations. He serves as Board Chair at Optivio and is also a Director of Cerebriu, a Denmark based AI company focused on radiology workflow and diagnostic improvement.

Jonathan earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University, an M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and an M.B.A in Health Policy and Management from Boston University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of numerous academic and clinical surgical societies.
