Marc Goldberg

GENERAL PARTNER

Marc co-founded BioVentures Investors with Peter Feinstein in 1999. Since his graduation from Harvard’s elite MBA/JD program in 1983, he has built a ­remarkable career as industry leader and consummate deal maker at Genetics Institute, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Institute, Safer Inc., the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and, most critically, for the BioVentures portfolio companies.

Marc’s achievements at BioVentures include:

• Structuring the transaction and guiding management through the $30M, 4X sale of New Chemical Entities 12 months after our initial investment
• Closing the sale of Angiolink to­ Medtronic, producing a 2.7X return over 27 months
• Selling Ardais to Gulfstream and then guiding the reorganization of Gulfsream into a successful research IT and services business
• Initiating and driving the restructuring of BioValve into two separate corporate entities, with a significant increase in potential for return on investment

In addition, he has participated in or advised on virtually every portfolio-company transaction or financing throughout BioVentures’ investing history

CEO, Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Institute
From 1991 to 1997 Marc was President and CEO of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Institute. During his tenure, MBRI raised $20 million in funding, was responsible for the launch of 24 new biotechnology companies and oversaw the third largest tech transfer office in New England.

Safer Inc., Genetics Institute
From 1987 to 1991, Marc held senior positions at Safer, including Vice President, Finance and Corporate Development and CFO. He negotiated four rounds of venture capital investment, numerous bank lines of credit, and multiple manufacturing contracts. As manager of all non-sales operations at Safer Inc., he negotiated five corporate partnerships and successfully sold the company.

At Genetics Institute, which he joined immediately after graduation, he established, operated and sold the agricultural division for a better than a 3X return in four years.

Massachusetts Biotechnology Council
Marc co-founded and served as founding president of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council in 1985, served four terms as its President, and was a Director from its inception in 1985 until 1997. On his retirement from the Board, Governor Weld proclaimed March 18, 1997 as “Marc Goldberg Day.” During the period of his leadership of the MBC, Marc was principle author of the Massachusetts Governor’s Task Force, Subcommittee on Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Development. In 1990, he received recognition for his work for the industry as a Finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year competition.

Marc is currently President of the Harvard Varsity Club, was a Governor of the Harvard Business School Association of Boston and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Worcester State College. He has also served as a member of the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Board of Directors Research Advisory Committee.

Marc earned his A.B. from Harvard College (Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude), his J.D. from Harvard Law School (cum laude), and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Marc is a member of the board of directors at Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Gulfstream Bioinformatics, Applied Spine Technologies, Verax Biomedical, CardioSolutions, Claros Diagnostics, sGC Pharmaceuticals, Spirus Medical, and Vital Sensors, and previously served on the boards of New Chemical Entities, Pintex and AngioLink.
